This updates Retrospect version 4.1 or 4.1A to version 4.2. The Retrospect 4.2 Updater will update the Retrospect application, online help, read me files, and the Advanced Driver Kit (if appropriate). Updated documentation is also included with the Retrospect 4.2 Updater.
Updating to Retrospect 4.2
Open the Retrospect 4.2 Updater application and the updater will locate Retrospect 4.1 or 4.1A on your hard drive. When you click Update the updater will update your copy of Retrospect to version 4.2.
If you have a previous version of the Advanced Driver Kit, the updater will update it to Advanced Driver Kit 1.7 to work with Retrospect 4.2.
What's new in Retrospect 4.2
Application-based, Cross-platform Client Licenses
Retrospect 4.2 eases the task of client administration in workgroups by shifting from individual client licenses to flexible application-based licenses. The backup administrator simply enters one or more client license codes into the Retrospect application. The administrator can then add networked Macintosh or Windows clients, up to the amount allowed by the license. Retrospect keeps track of all client licenses, significantly decreasing administration tasks. To view your available licenses, open the License Manager window from the Window menu.
New Retrospect Client packs contain software for both Macintosh and Windows platforms, providing users with more flexibility for heterogeneous networks. Previously, separate packs were required for each platform. Retrospect 4.2 also allows any previously purchased Retrospect Client codes to be used with either Macintosh 4.2 clients or Windows 5.0 clients, regardless of the Client package originally purchased.
A Client Updaters package with updates for both Macintosh and Windows clients is on the Dantz web site. Refer to the Client Installation Notes with the Client Updaters package for information on updating your clients.
Advanced Networking
Retrospect 4.2’s advanced networking features make it easy to back up any computer on the network. Administrators simply define IP address ranges, and Retrospect ensures clients located within those subnets are included in the backup. Organizations that use DHCP address allocation can now reliably back up client computers, even across one or more routers.
To access the Advanced Networking features of Retrospect 4.2, click Configure then click Clients. Click Network to see the clients on network window. Select the TCP/IP protocol. From the new TCP/IP menu, choose Configure Subnet Broadcast, which presents the subnet broadcast configuration window.
Terminology changes
Retrospect 4.2 contains updated terminology to make certain concepts clearer. Specifically:
StorageSets are now backup sets
New backups are now New Media backups
Full backups are now Recycle backups
Additional New Retrospect 4.2 Features
- HTML Help: Retrospect’s online help system is now easier to navigate and search. Hypertext links allow users to quickly access information within the program or on the Dantz website.
- DES Encryption: Retrospect 4.2 ships with the US government standard DES encryption. Previously unavailable internationally, this robust 56-bit encryption is now standard with all versions of Retrospect.
- Device Support: Retrospect 4.2 includes all devices supported by Retrospect 4.1 with Retrospect 4.1 Driver Update 1.7.
